The Middle East Forum Takes No Funds from Foreign Governments

Philadelphia – September 9, 2014 – A major exposé in the New York Times published on Sept. 6 reports how more than a dozen prominent American think tanks have been compromised in recent years by taking tens of millions of dollars from foreign governments. The Times found they push "U.S. government officials to adopt policies … reflect[ing] donors' priorities."
But not the Middle East Forum, which this year celebrates 20 years of (as our slogan puts it) "Promoting American interests." Period. We have never sought or taken funding from any foreign government, nor from any agent of a foreign government. And we never will.
The Forum relies primarily on donations from private American individuals, families, and foundations. We only accept gifts on a case-by-case basis from non-U.S. citizens and from corporations or foundations not based in the United States.
Our independence allows us to provide analysis on controversial and difficult issues others avoid – questioning assumptions, provoking thought, and offering creative solutions. Our audience, from students to policy makers, can rely on us to criticize, expose and advise based on an honest evaluation of American interests.
