UANI Statement on WAVE Conference in Tehran
Conference "Against Violence and Extremism" Rings Hollow in Light of Iran's Repression at Home and Violent Activities Abroad

New York, NY - Today, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) issued the following statement on the opening in Tehran of the First International Conference on the World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE):

During his 2013 speech before the UN General Assembly, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani proposed his WAVE initiative, supposedly to promote "tolerance over violence, progress over bloodletting, justice over discrimination, prosperity over poverty, and freedom over despotism." Yet Iran is in no position to instruct the international community on how to build a less violent world free of extremism. WAVE is merely a cynical ploy to mask the Iranian regime's notorious record of violence and extremism, including its role as the leading state sponsor of terrorism, its egregious abuse of human rights and decades of anti-American, anti-Western vitriol.

More than a year after the announcement of WAVE, Rouhani in particular should be held accountable for his failure to alleviate the world's legitimate concerns about Tehran's sponsorship of terrorist groups and sectarian militias, support for the vicious Assad regime in Syria, and refusal to roll back its illicit nuclear program. Under Rouhani's rule, Iranian partners and proxies across the region, including in Syria and Gaza, have engaged in brazenly criminal activity directly leading to the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians.

The Iranian theocracy under President Rouhani has also entrenched its persecution of women, political dissidents and religious minorities. This record is a standing rebuke to the principles of justice and tolerance. Tehran would better serve its people, neighbors, and the world at large by curbing its flagrant human rights abuses, terrorist activity, and illicit nuclear program, instead of hosting conferences that amount to farcical exercises in propaganda.
