Turkey: Teacher tells girls they “deserve to be raped” for not wearing hijab
This actually reflects the assumption, deeply rooted in Islam, that women are responsible for the self-control of men, and if a woman gets raped, it is because she provoked the rapist, and the fault lies entirely with her. A schoolteacher in the Central Anatolian province of Tokat has enraged parents after reportedly telling her teenage students that they deserve to be raped and treated cruelly because they do not wear the Islamic headscarf.
The teacher, identified as L.Y.İ., was substituting for an optional Quran class at Halil Rıfat Paşa Secondary School on Monday. According to the private Doğan news agency, the teacher was angered by students’ failure to remain silent despite her pleas and said: “You don’t cover your heads either. You deserve rape, you deserve cruelty.”
There were 17 seventh-grade students, both girls and boys, in the class, according to Doğan. L.Y.İ., a teacher of religious culture and morality, also chided students who attended a march in memory of a young woman named Özgecan Aslan who was brutally killed in February after she allegedly resisted rape. The teacher reportedly asked whether the students had recited al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran, for the soul of Aslan when they commemorated her. “You ran to the demonstration. She is under the ground now. Did you cite al-Fatiha? You may end up like Özgecan,” she reportedly told the students.
Parents went to the school principal to complain about the teacher after students told them about what happened during the class. Principal Mahmut Demirbağ then spoke to L.Y.İ. and told the parents that her remarks were misunderstood and that she had apologized.
But a parent was unsatisfied with Demirbağ’s explanation and filed a complaint against the teacher. “She insulted our children, saying they would deserve to be raped because they do not wear the headscarf. She insulted our 13-year-children this way because they are not wearing the headscarf. So I went to the prosecutor’s office and filed a complaint,” the parent, identified as Fadime G., told Doğan. “This teacher cannot teach my child at this school.”…
