UANI Condemns Iran's Imprisonment of Dual Nationals
Iranian regime's arrest of citizens from U.S., UK, France, and Canada shows flagrant hostility toward West and risk to foreign companies and their employees

New York, NY - Leaders of United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) today condemned the Iranian regime's deliberate targeting of dual nationals, after Tehran confirmed the arrest of yet another Iranian-American citizen. Over the last year, the Iranian government has arrested dual nationals from the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Canada, underscoring the ongoing threat Iran poses to Western countries, its citizens, and companies looking to do business in Iran.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran's recent arrest of Iranian-American Robin Shahini shows us that the fundamental nature of the Iranian regime remains unchanged since the signing of the nuclear deal," said Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Chairman of UANI. "This latest detention in a series of arrests of dual nationals from Western countries is irrefutable proof that hardliners continue to dominate Iran's judiciary and security services."

Kidnappings and arrests are among the leading risks identified in the UANI Threat Matrix for companies and countries pursuing potential business with Tehran. UANI continues its global campaign to raise awareness to the severe risks posed by the Iranian regime.

"I am outraged that Iran is still detaining innocent Americans, holding them hostage for months, if not years, on unspecified charges," said Barry Rosen, a UANI advisory board member and a survivor of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. "It has been 36 years since the Iran hostage crisis, and the regime still has not changed its behavior. It is still unsafe for Americans to travel to Iran just as it is still unsafe to pursue business there. We must come together and condemn this dangerous behavior and demand that this regime release these hostages immediately."

Along with Robin Shahini, Iran has detained the following dual nationals on trumped-up charges since the signing of the JCPOA: Businessman Siamak Namazi (USA); his father Baquer Namazi (USA); Internet freedom advocate Nizar Zakka (Lebanon, U.S. Permanent Resident); charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe (UK); former French embassy employee Nazak Afshar (France); and academic Homa Hoodfar (Canada).

For a comprehensive catalog of dual nationals seized since the signing of the nuclear deal, please see UANI's new timeline outlining Iran's continued reckless behavior.
