President Donald Trump is under attack for proposing to reverse Obama’s policy regarding transgenders in the military.  Obama’s policy regarding transgenders openly serving in the military and having their sex change operations paid for by taxpayer dollars had not been fully implemented when Donald Trump became president.  Defense Secretary James Mattis had delayed full implementation of the transgender policy pending a six month review before President Trump tweeted out his new policy on the issue.

President Donald Trump tweeted on July 26, 2017:  “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

On July 13, 2017, congress voted against banning the use of military funds for sex change surgeries.  Missouri Republican Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler proposed an amendment to the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would have denied the Pentagon taxpayer funds for transsexual “sex reassignment surgeries.” However, the amendment failed on a 209 to 214 vote with more than 20 Republicans siding with transgender funding.

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler’s statement on NDAA Amendment to Reverse Obama Transgender Policy (in part):

“The Obama transgender policy, which was implemented without input from Members of Congress, is ill-conceived and contrary to our goals of increasing troop readiness and investing defense dollars into addressing budget shortfalls of the past,” said Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler, a member of the House Armed Services Committee. “By recruiting and allowing transgender individuals to serve in our military we are subjecting taxpayers to high medical costs including up to $130,000 per transition surgery, lifetime hormone treatments, and additional surgeries to address the high percentage of individuals who experience complications,” added Hartzler. She noted surgeries alone could cost $1.35 billion over the next 10 years. For perspective, examples of other things the DoD could spend $1.35 billion on include 13 F-35's, 14 Super Hornet F-18’s, 2 B-21 long-range strike bombers, 8 KC-46's, all A-10 wing replacements or increased end strength of our troops.

“This policy is costly and a threat to our readiness. The deployability of individuals going through the sex transition process is highly problematic, requiring 210 to 238 work days where a soldier is non-deployable after surgery. This recovery time equates to 1.4 million manpower days where transgender personnel cannot deploy and fight our nation’s wars, therefore relying on an already stressed force to pick up the burden. It makes no sense to purposely recruit individuals who cannot serve. Transgendered individuals undergoing treatment are not eligible for special duties like flying status, personnel reliability program, and jobs requiring certain Security Clearances.”

Lifesitenews.com published an article titled:  Retired generals praise Trump’s ‘courageous’ transgender military ban.

A letter from 16 retired flag-rank officers, including seven major generals and an admiral, thanks President Trump for his "bold" and "extremely courageous decision” to reverse President Obama’s “transgender social experiment" in the military.

"There may be an enormous amount of vitriol directed at you for making this policy correction, but please know that overturning this policy may have done more in the long term to save the culture and war-fighting capacity of the U.S. military than perhaps any other military policy you will adopt as president," states the July 27 letter, signed by three lieutenant generals, seven major generals, three brigadier generals, an admiral, a vice admiral and a Marine Corps veteran (all retired).

Among the signers are Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, former Commanding General of the U.S. Army in the Pacific; Lt. Gen. William "Jerry" Boykin, former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense under President George W. Bush; decorated retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney; Maj. Gen. Michael Jones, former Chief of Staff, U.S. Central Command; and retired Admiral James Lyons, who commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet under President Reagan.

However, there is strong opposition to President Trump’s proposal to reverse Obama’s transgenders in the military policy.

•    The Hill reports:  56 retired generals, admirals warn against Trump's transgender ban.
•    Washington Post reports:  Protesters speak out against Trump’s transgender military ban in front of the White House.
•    The Guardian reports:  Civil rights groups to sue over Trump's plan for transgender military ban.
•    Politico reports:  Pentagon takes no steps to enforce Trump's transgender ban.
•    LA Times reports:  Top U.S. general says Pentagon will not change policy on transgender.

President Trump’s proposal to reverse Obama’s social program and taxpayer funded special medical benefits for transgenders has not been implemented.  It is important to support and encourage President Trump on this issue until his proposal is implemented.
